Do You Remember What It Was Like to Be a Child?
Now that Easter has passed and the school holidays are here, I find myself reflecting on the simple magic of childhood.
Do you remember what it felt like to spend hours outside, collecting sticks, making mud pies, climbing trees, building cubbies, or creating little worlds with whatever you could find? Childhood used to be slower. There was more time for imagination, wonder and connection.
These days, it can be so easy for screens, busy schedules and plastic toys with flashing lights and sounds to take over. But children still crave the same things they always have — time, connection, nature and the freedom to play in their own way.

Open-ended play is one of the greatest gifts we can offer children. Simple toys like blocks, loose parts, dolls, wooden animals, silks, play cloths and baskets allow children to create, imagine and explore without limits. There is no right or wrong way to play, which means children can build confidence, problem solve and express themselves naturally.
Bringing nature into play is also such a beautiful way to slow things down. A basket of gum nuts, leaves, shells, pinecones, sticks or flowers can become part of small world play, sensory play or art experiences. Natural materials help children feel calm, grounded and connected to the world around them.

At home, I notice how much more engaged Milla is when she is away from screens and offer simple, inviting opportunities to play. Whether it is setting up a small activity, going on a nature walk, baking together, reading stories or creating with loose parts, these are often the moments children remember most.
Rather than focusing on more “stuff”, I encourage you to think about the simple things that inspire meaningful play and connection. A beautiful wooden toy, a basket of natural treasures or time spent together outdoors can create memories that last far beyond childhood.

At Play To Learn, I love helping families and educators create calm, inviting and low-tox play spaces filled with natural, open-ended resources that truly support children’s development and imagination.
Wishing you beautiful moments of connection, play and simple memories together these holidays and ito term 2.
