Why Block Play is More Than Just Fun

There’s something timeless about block play – it’s one of those activities that never goes out of style. But it’s not just fun; it’s a powerhouse for children’s development. When children stack, balance, build, and knock down, they’re working on problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, fine motor coordination, and even early maths and science concepts. It’s open-ended play at its best, where there’s no right or wrong way to create – just endless possibilities and imagination at work.

But not all blocks are created equal. Choosing quality, low-tox blocks is so important – not just for peace of mind, but for your child’s health and the planet too. I love wooden blocks made from sustainably sourced timber and finished with natural oils and low tox paints. These materials are safe for little hands and mouths and are designed and built to last through years (and generations!) of creative play. Plus, they look beautiful in your play space and feel great to touch – something plastic can never quite match.

To really bring block play to life, mix in lots of open-ended treasures. Think wooden trees, tunnels, silks, buttons, natural fabric scraps, transport vehicles, mandala sets and animal figurines. These kinds of pieces spark creativity and storytelling in ways you might not expect – suddenly a tower becomes a castle, the tunnel is a dragon’s cave, and the blocks are roads winding through a forest. The more varied the materials, the richer the play. Let's allow the children to take the lead and watch the magic unfold.

If you’re ready to create an inspiring play space with safe, beautiful resources, i've got a gorgeous range of blocks and open-ended materials to explore. Feel free to get in contact with me for tips on choosing the right pieces for your home or children's service. Let’s build something wonderful together!
